When Wong writes that “the plastic straw ban is symptomatic of larger systemic issues when it comes to the continual struggle for disability rights and justice” (par. 7), she seems to assume that readers will agree with her characterization of people with disabilities as in the middle of a long struggle for their rights. What assumptions do you have about people with disabilities? Where do those assumptions come from? Are you aware of the struggle Wong describes? Does reading Wong’s piece challenge any of your assumptions about those with disabilities or their rights?
