When we don’t take these moral commands as absolutes and allow exceptions to them, aren’t we really watering them down into insipid rules such as, “Always keep a promise unless you think it is better not to”? Doesn’t such an insipid rule allow for so many loopholes that it is ineffective in guiding our actions?
