When using the avoiding style, people refrain from arguing and refuse to confront their partners in any meaningful way. Avoiding tactics are fairly common. Studies have shown that roommates frequently report using the avoiding style in their conflicts (Sillars, 1980), and 63% of college students report withholding at least one complaint from their dating partners (Roloff & Cloven, 1990).
