When the issue was finally discussed in the Parliament after some delay, the original proposals regarding both the sale and promotion of cigarettes within the EU were considerably scaled back. MEPs rejected the plan to ban ‘slim’ cigarettes and opted for menthol-flavoured products to be phased out over eight rather than three years as had been proposed.
