When a temperature sensor (e.g., thermocouple) is inserted inside a hot gas flow, convection occurs from the mainstream to the thermocouple bead and conduction occurs through the thermocouple wire. This conduction loss from the thermocouple bead through the wire can be modeled as a fin with finite length and fixed-tip temperature; this is so-called stem conduction. A rectangular duct consists of copper plates with heaters attached to them to increase the temperature of air flow through the duct.
