What to Assess
In Chapter 1 of the
Handbook of Workplace Assessment, author Kevin Murphy (2010) describes two primary approaches for workplace assessment—assessing work-oriented strategies (what people do to carry out their assigned roles and responsibilities) and analyzing people-oriented factors (the characteristics of people that influence how they perform in the workplace). For each approach, describe the domains that might be assessed and what implications may be drawn by assessing each domain. Based on your understanding of the use of assessment in succession planning (as described in Chapter 15 by Paese, 2010), how might each of these approaches be used in succession planning? Explain your answer, referencing course readings and other academic sources.
Your initial post should be at least 300 words.
Introduction Assessment has been used in the workplace for many years to assist in a wide range of decision-making processes, including selecting candidates to hire, identifying individuals for promotion, determining compensation, and evaluating performance. Philosophies about assessment and assessment practices have evolved over time, and contemporary academic thinking about workplace assessment is influenced by research into the applicability, fairness, and usefulness of assessment, as well as the positive discriminatory capabilities and potential adverse impact of assessment processes. This course examines the use of assessment tools to provide insights about performance, effectiveness, and development of individuals in leadership and management roles. As such, we will explore not only the theory and practice of assessment in the workplace, but also the application of specific assessment tools that are in common use in U. S. work environments. Week One provides an overview of workplace assessment with a discussion of a critical question: what should we assess? The first Discussion Forum assignment asks you to reflect on two approaches to workplace assessment that are discussed in Chapter One of the Scott and Reynolds (2010) textbook—assessing what people need to do to fulfill workplace roles and responsibilities, and assessing the characteristics of people that influence their success in fulfilling workplace roles and responsibilities. The quiz focuses on reliability and validity, two critical considerations in determining the quality of an assessment process. The Week One Written Assignment focuses on the application of assessment processes in succession management. You will discuss foundational principles that should be considered in establishing a growth-focused succession management process, and then propose a set of “best practices” associated with the use of assessments for succession planning.
