What is the social construction of reality? Sociologists believe that there is no such thing as an objective reality. Instead, according to Berger and Luckman, we construct reality through interaction. Cooley called the process by which our identity develops the looking-glass self. In his model, we develop our identity based on our evaluation of others’ reactions. Goffman said we purposely try to control others’ opinions of us through impression management. We also construct reality through communication, both verbal and nonverbal.
