MR. NELMARK SOY FRIANEZA Research Adviser July 2022 CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND This chapter contains Background of the Study, Statement of the Problem and Hypothesis, Conceptual Framework, Significance of the Study, Scope and Delimitation and Definition of Terms. Background of the Study Social media usage by students is so rampant recently because of easy access to devices such as smartphones, I-phones, Nokia, tablets, I-pad and laptops which are connected to the internet. Addiction to the usage of social media has extremely increased in recent times. The perils of its effects on the academic performance of the over-involved students are disturbing. Academic performance which is depicted by the grades of students is a great concern. Students that spend excessive time on social networks become dependent on it and it is believed that their academic performance diminishes proportionately. It is perceived that school grades will suffer when spending too much time on social sites such as Facebook, twitter and Instagram as valuable study time is lost. (Kubey, 2001). These therefore necessitate the study of the impact of social network usage on academic performance of secondary school students in the English language. Students who spend more time on social media platforms are more likely to have poor academic achievement, according to previous studies. This is due to the fact that kids prefer to spend their time online conversing and making friends on social networking sites rather than reading books. Today's teen culture is heavily influenced by social media. According to surveys, 90% of youths aged 14 to 17 have used social media. Seventy-five percent say they have at least one active social media presence, and 51 percent say they visit one at least once a day. Two-thirds of teenagers own a mobile device that can connect to the internet. Teens spend nearly nine hours every day online on average, not including homework time. There are benefits to social media, but there are also risks. It is critical for parents to assist their children in using these sites appropriately. Social media has exploded as a category of online discourse where people create content, share it, bookmark it and network at a prodigious rate. Because of its ease of use, speed and reach, social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and setting trends and agenda in topics that range from the environment and politics to technology and the entertainment industry (Asur and Huberman, 2010). In the last ten years, the online world has changed dramatically, thanks to the invention of social media, young men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing rate. Seventy-three percent of wired American teens now use social media websites (Oberst, 2010). Martin (2008), and Lusk, (2010) share the same concept of social media. To them, social media is the use of Facebook, blogs, twitter, my space and linked in for the purpose of communication, sharing photos as well as videos. For the purposes of this study, social media is defined as the use of the internet for communication, sharing of ideas, and sharing of images and videos by users via Facebook, Whatsapp, Twitter, Skype, Instagram, Discord etc. What began as a pastime for a few computer literate individuals has evolved into a social norm and way of life for people all over the world (Boyd 2007). Teenagers and young adults have embraced these sites in particular as a means of connecting with their peers, sharing information, reinventing their personalities, and showcasing their social life (Boyd, 2007). Various academics have done studies to determine the impact of social media on users; for example, Moon (2011) claimed that social media had a negative impact on students in a study titled "The Effects of Social Media through Academic Performance of Grade 12 ABM Students at PHINMA- University of Pangasinan S.Y 2022-2023." The more students using Social Media, the more it impairs their academic performance, according to the findings. We did this study to demonstrate to students the impact of social media on their learning so that they are aware of what should and should not be done so that their activities, particularly their learning, are not harmed. There are good and bad ways to use social media with us. We know it helps to relieve weariness and stress, but it's also something you do to keep yourself entertained. However, this does not negate the fact that it has an impact on you. We are unable to state this, but the following will illustrate what is contained in our prepared study. The impact of social network sites on academic performance also raised another major concern which is health. Today social network sites are running the future and career of students. Social network sites were only an electronic connection between users, but unfortunately it has become an addiction for students. Every human being fears having health problems. Once someone has health issues, his or her life will be affected. Therefore, people need to be careful and cherish their good health. Nowadays, a health issue, not only comes from the called environment of the person, but also within the environment. In the previous years the main discussion issue was the addiction to television, today’s issues deal with internet addiction and the increased amount of time young people and adults spend on searching the internet.
