Critique of Articles
What Is Love?
In the article titled “What Is Love?” writer Paul Gray has
attempted to infuse the elements of persuasion. Th
ough the writer’s
endeavor in this article seems to convince the readers about the
scientific reality behind love, he has failed to incorporate the
elements of ethos, and logos in an appropriate manner, but the element
of pathos has been meticulously blended within the same.
The lack of logical progression in the article can be found in
the statement that “Love does not register as definitively on the
instruments; it leaves a blurred fingerprint that could be mistaken
for anything from indigestion to a maniac attack” (Gray, 1993). Gray
has tried to convince the readers of some kind of scientific truth
about love but he has failed to cite any proper experiment or
scientific study which has claimed the same thing about love which
Gray has stated. So, here it can be seen that Gray has tried to
establish a truth without proper logical base. But it should be
mentioned that the writer has been able to infuse the element of ethos
in a more proper manner than he has been able to infuse the element of
logos. Gray has provided ample examples and cited different scientists
and anthropologists to explain how love as a subject of study was once
avoided by scientists and how recently this subject has gained
popularity among the scientists. Though Gray has instilled the element
of ethos in the article he has failed to justify his own credibility
as a person eligible to discuss about the concerned topic....
