What is a One-Pager? It is a single-page response to your reading. It connects the ideas in the book or section of your book, to show your thoughts in a creative way. You will create your One-Pager so that your audience will understand something about the book you read.

What to do:

  • Write the title of the book, correctly punctuated, along with the author’s name somewhere on the page.

  • Select two interesting quotations that show the theme of the book. Write them on the page with quotation marks around them. Write these in one color or section; write them down anywhere on your page.

  • Write two personal statements about what you have read. These are not simple opinions about the content of the material (for example: it was funny or it was boring), but meaningful statements about what you have read. (For example: I could relate to the theme of the book because I have experienced...) Write these in a second color.

  • Ask three meaningful questions about the theme of the book. (For example: Why do you think that people feel a need to fall in love?). Write these in a third color or section.

  • Answer your three questions with complete sentences. (For example: Carl refuses Anthony’s friendship because he wants to be independent.) Write these in a fourth color or section.

  • Write a 5-7 sentence summary, correctly punctuated and complete sentences. Tell us the main things that happened in Part One.

  • Create your own metaphor for the book.. Remember that a metaphor is comparing two things saying that one thing is something else. ex. The anger was a fire that burned deep inside her soul.

  • Draw or create two images that represent the information in your reading. It is important that the visuals have a strong connection to the book.

  • Be creative. Communicate your understanding or interpretation of the reading. Create in a way that your audience will understand something about the literature piece.

Helpful hints:

  • Don’t simply summarize the book.

  • Use white computer paper or paper from a sketchpad instead of lined paper, or create it digitally. If you do lined paper, please turn it in by taking a picture.

  • Use the entire page; make it rich with words and images.

  • It is better to use colored pencils instead of markers, unless you are a skilled artist, if you are going to do it on paper.

  • Don’t use yellow ink or markers. It is difficult to read.
