What ethnic groups exist in the United States? Ethnic groups are those who share a common ancestry, history, or culture. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, 75 percent of the U.S. population is White, or of European ancestry. Native Americans comprise 1.5 percent of the population and are worse off than other minority groups with regard to poverty and other social ills. Of the population, 12.5 percent is Hispanic, or Latino, with roots in Latin America; 12.5 percent is Black, or AfricanAmerican; and 3.6 percent is Asian. There are about 2 million individuals from the Middle East and North Africa in the United States.
