What are the major differences between the House of Representatives and the Senate in their membership, requirements and duties? House of Representatives and Senate
The House of Representatives has 435 voting members and 6 non-voting members
whereas the Senate has 100 senators. For eligibility, one should be 2 years while seeking to be elected into the House of Representatives, and 30 years to qualify for the Senate. All leaders must be American Citizens for seven years to be elected to the House and nine years to be elected to the Senate. In addition, one must be inhabiting the state he or she is seeking an elective position for. Duties given to the Senate include ratification of treaties and approving presidential appointments. House representatives, on the other hand, initiate a revenue-raising bill and start impeachment cases. It is the duty of the Senate to decide on the impeached cases.
    The two chambers were created after the issue of representation was brought up. There was a need for equal and proportional representation. As such, larger states were awarded the House because it was proportional to those being represented while the smaller states were given the Senate thus leading to equal representation. This translates to the Virginia Plan for big states and the New Jersey Plan for small states.     
Elected officials can choose to use the Delegate or Trustee Models. In the delegate model, the leaders represent and convey different views from their electorates. Such a leader has minimal chances of exercising their own preferences or judgments.
