Wetlands, sometimes called the “nurseries of life,” are home to thousands of species of plants and animals and are found on every continent expect Antarctica. Canada has approximately 130 million hectares of wetlands, which is about 25% of all the wetlands on our planet.14 Suppose that in a recent Department of Agriculture study, a random sample of wetlands was obtained for each combination of state and cover type. The cover type classifications are defined by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service and are determined by the representative plant species. The area covered by water was measured (in hectares), and the data are given in the following table.
