ASSESSMENT 1





In this first assessment, students willproduce a detailed plan in response to a community health need in the current Australian context.




This assessment will enable students to articulate their knowledge and understanding of health promotion and evaluation in addressing a contemporary health issue within Australia. Students must identify and consider the needs of the selected community to demonstrate critical thinking and discuss the role of the nurse in meeting the health care needs of this community.







The assessment will be completed in SWAY and is divided into two parts:




1. Written component




2. Recorded presentation




In designing your webpage in SWAY, consider your audience: the nursing managers in the local health district, and you want to convince them that the health issue is a significant concern within the community and needs action.










Students will have the choice of addressing one of the following two topics:








  • Vaping – 12-18 yrs old(relational community)



  • Colorectal cancer - males > 45 yrs(relational community)

Discuss the role of the nurse in meeting the diverse health and well-being needs of the community with the selected health issue. In this section you will need to:







  1. Identify and discuss the role of the nurse in raising awareness, conducting risk assessments, providing education to caregivers, and collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams in the community in addressing the health care issue (approx. 5 mins)



  2. Critically analyse and make recommendations of how the nurses’ role could be enhanced by synthesising insights from the previous sections to propose comprehensive strategies for reducing the health effects of the chosen health issue. Consider the unique challenges and opportunities in implementing preventive measures, engaging communities, and advocating for policy (approx. 2 mins)
