Week 6: Case study Case Study Chapter 13 Respiratory Mr Don had been a pharmacist in NY City. He retired to Florida and spent most of his days swimming in the Gulf. He was healthy and strong. Gradually, however, his years of smoking began to compromise his lung capacity. Soon he could not swim at all. Eventually, even trips to the beach were not possible. The diagnosis was pulmonary emphysema and COPD. Oxygen was needed, and his activities were diminished to cooking dinner for his wife and himself. Mr Don was embarrassed about the oxygen tank and would no longer go out in public. He died when he was 85.     As per the observation of the case of Mr. Don, COPD and Emphysema refer to clinical issues related to the respiratory system; these directly affect the lungs and individuals having them showcase specific signs and symptoms. For example, the shortness of breath particularly when exercising or doing intense physical activity is one of the commonest signs of COPD. Additionally, there can be tightness in chest, wheezing and constant coughing as well as mild to severe pain in chest (Couturaud et al., 2021). There can also be lack of energy along with weight loss for no specific reason. For Mr. Don, he suffered from inability of lungs in swimming due to COPD.
