We often hear about the recycling of plastic, glass, paper and many other products, but clothing is not always in the conversation. However textiles can be recycled, the EPA reports that the average person throws away 70 pounds of clothing each year. 85 percent of those textiles end up in landfills, this is why textile recycling is so important because some clothing does not decompose at all over time. Methods for processing textiles starts with raising the awareness of the potential environmental damage that can be caused by just discarding clothing. Secondly a collection point has to be created in order to gather and sort. The clothing is then placed into three categories. Reuse, Rags and Fiber, clothing is placed back into the fashion market or turned into wiping rags and even broken down and compressed to make mattresses and car insulation. There are various methods but the overall intent is to divert the textiles from landfills to sit and cause harmful emissions. The mentality of the general public has to be changed to donation instead of discard. The Secondary Materials and Recycled Textiles Association (SMART) has developed programs nationwide to educate all on the need and benefits to recycling textiles. Their aim is to teach that clothing is a renewable resource. https://waste-management-world.com/a/trash-talking-textile-recycling https://www.thebalancesmb.com/how-garment-recycling-works-2877992 Tremayne javascript: https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/1f60ed23-ba3b-4c4d-b09f-8fd3564011f1/discussionForum/message/printFriendlyThread 6/5/2018 https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/1f60ed23-ba3b-4c4d-b09f-8fd3564011f1/discussionForum/message/printFriendlyThread https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/1f60ed23-ba3b-4c4d-b09f-8fd3564011f1/discussionForum/message/printFriendlyThread 1/1 Send To Printer Close Window Forums / Week 5 Forum / Week 5: Key Modalities of Sustainment / Properly Dispose of our Clothes Properly Dispose of our Clothes - Wesley Boyd 2018-06-05 09:06:34.0 Last Edited By Wesley Boyd on Jun 5, 2018 9:07 AM It has been estimated by the EPA that 5% of landfills is made up of textiles (Council for Textile Recycling, 2018). Do you know how much time, effort, and water is put into making our clothes? It takes about 700 gallons of water to make one shirt and about 9 hours of a constant heavy flow of water to make one pair of jeans (Planet Aid, 2016). The decomposition of our clothing products take longer than that of regular waste like food, cardboard and plastic. Most of these items just end up in regular landfills with everything else that gets thrown away. We have to pay more attention to what we discard and recycle all that we can. Textile recycling is the process by which old clothing and other textiles are recovered for reuse or material recovery (Leblanc). There are multiple companies that have been putting forth the effort to get us to recycle our clothes. Companies like Planet Aid and USA Gain have bins across America for old and unused clothes to be thrown into for recycling purposes. The bins may vary in color but they are available to use. Almost 80 billion clothing garments are produced each year and it has been estimated that the average American throws away about 70 pounds of clothing by the end of that year (Planet Aid, 2018). Almost 100% of every clothing article that we wear is recyclable so lets do our part and send them where they need to go (G). One can review the manufacturing industry for clothing or take look at the current events and policy that surrounds this industry. You can also explore the Council for Textile Recycling for more ideas on what is happening and what else could be done. Another important concept is upcycling. Upcycling is when a supposed waste product is repurposed and put to good use in a totally different manner than originally intended. Here are a couple of stories about upcycling and repurposing. Link: https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Southwest-Stories/Repurpose-with-Purpose-Southwest- Airlines-Takes-Sustainability/ba-p/42059 Link: https://www.swordandplough.com/ These readings are helpful to understand what this field is all about. However, sustainment does not happen on its own. In many cases, it is a matter of processing and consolidating the returns or defective goods for recycling or re-purposing. HAZMAT return, consolidation, and massing, is unlike other products such as the return of mail order products e.g., appliances, books, clothes or other mail order products and must maintain a unique transportation route. In addition, HAZMAT is seldom returned to the ‘creative’ origin so the transport is specially designed. On the other hand, large retailers such as Walmart, Target, JC Penney and Sears generally have dedicated ‘retrograde’ highway transportation. However, not all HAZMAT can be transported on the highway. The most preferred transport modes for HAZMAT are freight rail (BMSF and CSX) and barge transport to the Gulf and/or points along the way the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Some HAZMAT is not waste but rather gas, fuel, and elements in a non-normal state such as liquid Oxygen, dry ice, and solvents used for industrial cleaning and detoxification of facilities using toxic materials to produce their product. To use barge or freight rail can be an expense for the smaller operator. Consolidation of HAZMAT sent to a massing facility will be transported by train in specially marked rail cars. Time is generally not the limiting factor but cost is a major driver. Some states do not allow the transfer of accountability for HAZMAT even though the HAZMAT is given to a consolidator for further transport. The liability issue is a major concern of the company producing HAZMAT as a waste product or as a retail product. Consolidation facilities have to be licensed by the state. Employees have to be trained and certified to handle HAZMAT. Massing points are inspected regularly by the State and Federal HAZMAT EPA. Most every regulation can be traced to the Transportation Safety Act of 1974, the HAZMAT consolidation regulations of 1976. The HAZMAT Transportation Uniform Safety Act of 1990 as amended is the newest of the sources regulating the transport of HAZMAT. Motor carrier regulation (trucks, rail, and water) are found in 49 CFR and related to 29 CFR. https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/PagePicker?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=summary&title=&sendingPage=-1&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=-1&path=&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/PagePicker?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=summary&title=&sendingPage=-1&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=-1&path=&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=pop&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944806&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304466&path=3&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=push&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944810&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304598&path=next&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944759&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304738&path=0&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944806&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304466&path=1&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944808&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304596&path=2&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944806&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304466&path=3&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/access/content/group/management-common/ReverseLogisticsManagement/RLMT302/www.apparelsearch.20130322132126.URL https://www.ftc.gov/tips-advice/competition-guidance/guide-antitrust-laws/dealings-supply-chain/manufacturer-imposed http://www.weardonaterecycle.org/ https://www.southwestaircommunity.com/t5/Southwest-Stories/Repurpose-with-Purpose-Southwest-Airlines-Takes-Sustainability/ba-p/42059 https://www.swordandplough.com/ 6/5/2018 Lesson Page https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source= N E X TB A C K This is very important because in the chain of custody, regardless of liability, is the most sacrosanct part of handing HAZMAT. Consolidation and mode selection are nearly immune from time constraints but extremely sensitive to safety and cost. Safety is the highest standard because, without safety, there will be incidents and accidents. Can we think of regulations that affect us on a daily basis? How do you protect your family from HAZARD material? Who has transported gasoline in their trunk or another enclosed area for use with your lawnmower? Reflecting back upon that situation, do you think that it was safe? https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=push&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944810&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304598&path=next&addTool=-1&recheck=&id= https://edge.apus.edu/portal/tool/9d40c68c-2061-45f3-86a5-d4f1a89ff896/ShowPage?returnView=&studentItemId=0&backPath=pop&errorMessage=&clearAttr=&source=&title=&sendingPage=1944806&newTopLevel=false&postedComment=false&addBefore=&itemId=6304466&path=3&addTool=-1&recheck=&id=
