Should immigration be made easier?
(10. Should changes be made to the U.S. immigration policy?)
Are immigrants our greatest strength or greatest weakness
? Despite the wealth of
evidence available on this issue, which almost all points to the same conclusion, this topic
appears to be open for debate, especially within the political sphere, with political figures the
world over complaining about the level of migration and using it to rally popular support.
Unfortunately for these political figures, they are on the wrong side of this debate; the
evidence clearly points out that there are major benefits to immigration, and that there are
virtually no negative repercussions, especially if the nature of that immigration is properly
managed. This paper will defend the thesis that immigration is, in essence, a societal good,
and that as a result changes should be made to immigration policy to allow it to occur more
freely.
There are two major considerations that should be taken to immigration. The first is a
simple political battlefield; how should we set immigration policy in order to attract the best
of global talent to America? It would be hard to argue that there were any negative
repercussions to taking skilled, professional persons into the country as easily as possible,
particularly since their relatively expensive training (very expensive, in the case of doctors,
soldiers and lawyers, for example).
On the other hand, there is the problem of immigration as it stands. Regardless of
political grandstanding, immigration is simply a fact of the modern world. We exist within an
era when travel is cheaper and more available than it has ever been before, and as part of this
short and long term migration have become a larger part of people‟s lives than it ever has
been before.
Historically, America is a land founded on migration, and many would argue that this
is its major strength. The national self-identity was formed by people that were escaping

from th4e „old world‟, mired in European dynastic politics that essentially denied people the
chance for free agency within their own lives. Indeed, perhaps the single most famous
American quote after the Declaration of Independence itself is the words written on the
statue of liberty; “Give me your tired, your poor/Your huddled masses yearning...
