Week 1 Essay Questions 1. Consider the observation that people taking Drug X for headaches also seem to have low blood pressure. Design a simple experiment based on this observation, and include a hypothesis statement and your actual experimental design for the study. 2. Imagine that in 2020 you are the top biologist at a research station studying biodiversity in Costa Rica. A young scientist brings you a sample from a previously unexplored site. She asks you to look at the sample and determine whether it indeed contains microscopic, living organisms. As you begin your investigations, you must first decide what characteristics distinguish life from nonlife. How would you differentiate a living organism from nonliving matter (including viruses and prions)? 3. It was a commonly held notion that humans should consume eight glasses of water a day until recent scientific evidence called this practice into question. What chemical properties of water do you think contributed to the acceptance of this hypothesis? 4. If you were to use a parts of a town/city to describe the way a cell’s organelles work together what would the “town function” of each organelle presented this week be. For example, Lysosomes would be the town’s recycling center.

1. The hypothesis is that patients taking drug X have low blood
pressure which can be caused due to severe inflamm
ation of
organs inside the body.
The experiment is done by taking two groups of people. One
group is given drug X and the other group is not given any drug.
If after many trials people taking drug X have the low blood
pressure then the hypothesis of people taking drug X have low
blood pressure hold true provided the group that have not
been exposed to drug X have no cases of low blood pressure.
Also all other conditions except intake of drug X should be kept
common for both of them and both the groups of people
should face exactly the same conditions except intake of
drug X.
2. To differentiate a lving organism from a non – living one the
following should be checked –
(a) Growth – All living organisms are generally known to have
the property of growth which is not normally not found in
non – living matter and can serve as an important
parameter of differentiation. But there may be exceptional
cases in which non living objects like mountains, boulders
and sandstones can be found to be...
