Water flows in a 200-ft-long cast iron pipe 6 inches in diameter inclined on a slope of 10% as shown in Figure P7 .17. The flow rate is 300 gpm (U.S.) and the observed piezometric head loss across the pipe is 1 foot. The temperature of the water is 65°F. (a) Using the Morris and Wiggen criterion, calculate the boundary layer thickness. (b) If the pipe material is cast iron, can this be considered a smooth pipe? (c) If the pipe material is wrought iron, can this be considered a smooth pipe case?
