Water at 20◦C flows from point A (water supply source under pressure) to point B (destination is kitchen faucet) and from point A to point C (destination is laundry room faucet) through three galvanized iron branching pipes with a common junction J as illustrated in Figure EP 8.26. The pipe system contains a source, two destinations, three single pipes, three regular 90◦ threaded elbows, and two fully open globe valves. Pipe 1 is 0.08 m in diameter and 100 m long. Pipe 2 is 0.05 m in diameter and 90 m long. Pipe 3 is 0.065 m in diameter and 150 m long. At point A the pressure is 4 × 105 N/m2 , and the elevation is 0 m. At point B, the pressure is 0 N/m2 , and the elevation is 25 m. At point C, the pressure is 0 N/m2 , and the elevation is 16 m. (a) Determine the discharge in pipe 1. (b) Determine the discharge in pipe 2. (c) Determine the discharge in pipe 3.
