Introduction
PTSD have serious and lasting consequences leading to helplessness, horror and intense fear. The patients suffering from PTSD have reactions of anger, shock, nervousness, fear and guilt. In the current case study, the offender was military personnel who have encountered a death situation and have withstood the death of his friends who fought with him in war (YouTube, 2021).
1. Definition of PTSD
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that is also known as shell-shock syndrome or battle-fatigue condition. This condition is serious and develops in an individual who has experienced and witnessed terrifying and traumatic events that could have led to a physical threat or physical harm.
2. Importance of Officers Being Aware of PTSD During Handling the Public
Most of the police officers are not trained in recognising PTSD not they are trained on how to interact with a teen, child or adult suffering from the impacts of traumatic experiences. This is because the training does not include adolescent development or psychology. This results in a lack of awareness that not only risks the offender but also the officer handling the offender with PTSD.
The criminal justice professionals including the police officers need to be trained on trauma-informed response training so that they can handle offenders who are suffering from PTSD (Strategies for Youth, 2021). Trauma-informed training helps the police officer become increasingly understanding of the trauma and its impact that the offender is suffering. Further, the training helps in developing the decision-making ability of the officers so that they can make appropriate responses to the situation.
