Total: /100 Comments: EXAMPLE OF REFLECTION ON THE FILM MISSREPRESENTATION "The predominantly male dominated film industry is an example of how the competitive nature of media perpetuates gender stereotypes (claim). Taking Hollywood as an example(narrowing down the scope of the reflection), men outnumber women 4 to 1 in roles such as director and cinematographer (evidence/proof/problem). While it is true that Hollywood is slowly changing, for example, more women, accounting for 37% of major characters, are employed in the industry now than ever before, (nuance/different point), certain stereotypes, such as having a female protagonist over the age of 45 have failed to catch up with the discourse (evidence). While it is true that more women are seen in the industry, it does not mean that they are necessarily heard (different claim/ more nuance). Gender stereotyping does more than reveal the underrepresentation of women in film and media, indeed it is clear that the problem also exposes how women are portrayed in the industry (signposting to next point). The objectification of women speaks to outdated female stereotypes that are typified by the male gaze (new claim). For example, while the show Wonder Woman (specific example) is often heralded as a successful example of subversive feminism in the late 1970s, with its author William Mouton Marston quoted as saying, “[she] encourages women to stand up for themselves, to learn to fight, and be strong, so they don’t have to be scared, or depend on men” (again, note how reflection is drawn from the documentary), and while indeed this might have even been the initial intention, the way that this super human character was presented, in terms of her sexual attractiveness and attire, could just as easily be seen as a symbol anchored in the dominant sexist ideology of the system that created her (broader context). The oversexualisation of female heroines is thus a symptom of an industry in which ‘sex sells’, and a woman’s ability is reduced to her commercial application."
