The 16

century Europe was dominated by the mighty kingdom of Spain. The period
from the 16
th
to the 17
th
centuries is usually termed as the Golden Age of Spain and the
conquests of Spain reached its apex during this period. One of the most important aspects
which led to the rise of Spain was the multi-ethnic enterprise of the Spanish Empire which,
according to Henry Kamen (“The Spanish Empire”, n.d.), was composed of armaments from
Milan, Genoese and German bankers (as the Fuggers), Portuguese and Venetian sailors,
German and Italian soldiers, English and Chinese merchants, and the Native American allies.
This ethnic diversity was the trademark of the Empire of Charles and his successors.
Primarily the colonization of the New World paved the way for the economic
prosperity of Spain which in turn helped the country to emerge as the most dominant
European power during the 16
th
century. Spain’s economic developments were also aided by
the advent of a series of Spanish warrior-explores known as the Conquistadors. These
Conquistadors played an important role in the process of colonization of the New World. The
internal feuds and conflicts of the Natives of the New World was another reason which
helped Spanish invaders to strengthen their hold over the Native American population. The
fact that the Native tribes of the Americas were keen to form coalition with the Spanish to
invade and defeat the powerful empires like the Aztecs or the Incas, also added to the
advantages of the Spanish Empire....
