want to start by saying I respect your view regarding the disadvantages of GMOs and the short time they have been marketed for commercial public consumption. This is a very short time to adequately study what possible effect the genetic modification might have on humans. I also must say on a personal level, as someone with an autoimmune disease, I have reactions to things others do not have, so I avoid anything not organic. So, my next views might seem very hypocritical. With over 11 million people undernourished in developing countries, and estimates of 45% of all childhood deaths linked to malnutrition, the most pressing concern to me is not what potentially is going to happen in 10 years or 20 years if we eat this; it is how do we keep the people from dying now and how quickly can we get food to the people that need it the most. On the 9th of August Salmon became the first genetically engineered animal to enter the food supply. The company makes claims that this salmon can reach adult size in 18 months instead of 30 months as a non-GMO salmon. This salmon also consumes 20 to 25% less food. Along with crops already approved for human consumption, this is something that could be a huge help for world hunger. So, yes, I agree that more studies are needed, but I cannot agree that is not a beneficial endeavor. Most definitely if I was one of the 11 million people going hungry I am sure I would also feel the same way.
