Wall’s photograph does not have all the bulbs lighted. In fact, he has chosen to light only some of the bulbs in order to improve the lighting for his photograph. Is that decision a defect in his eff ort to interpret the novel, or is it the very thing that makes his interpretation more dramatic and more likely to produce a response in the viewer?
