THE EVIL OF BRIDE KIDNAPPING
Anyone can get stunned by going through the reports of bride kidnapping which is still
bein
g carried on as tradition in some countries of the world and especially in Kyrgyzstan. Living
in this technologically advanced era of the 21
st
century where almost each and every country of
the world is trying to formulate legislation to provide equal opportunities to women and to
provide them with fundamental human rights one can be spellbound to learn that still now in
many parts of the world the practice of bride kidnapping is being traditionally followed. It is a
shameful practice which should be prevented from persisting and its existence should be seized
not only to protect the fundamental rights of women but to restrict the advancement of the devil
in the domain of mankind.
Bride kidnapping denotes a brutal and primitive custom in which “single young men
kidnap their bride of choice and pressure them to agree to marriage…” (Najibullah, 2011)
Traditionally when a Kyrgyz man in his twenties urges to get married for the first time he selects
a bride and starts arranging for her kidnapping. Usually the man is accompanied by his friends in
seizing the young woman, most of the time in a violent manner and the woman is being driven to
the captor’s family home. The female relatives of the captor do the rest of the job by persuading
the kidnapped woman to marry her captor. It is one of the worst genres of violence against
woman and can be equated to the perverted practice of date rape which is often to found in the
Western countries, mainly in the U.S. It is astonishing that though the practice of bride

kidnapping is legally banned in Kyrgyzstan, it is a country where the convention is still going on
in vogue. By going through the article “Kyrgyzstan – The Kidnapped Bride” on the website
www.pbs.org (2004) anybody can be astonished and frightened to learn how young women are
being kidnapped by group of men in order to make them accept a forceful marriage. The stories
