Written Assignment on “The Secret Life of Boys” Be sure to carefully watch the video “The Secret Life of Boys.” Take notes while you watch it so you can take a position and support it. You will use the video as a resource as well as your own life experiences/beliefs. It is important for you to use both the reference AND your life. You will have the opportunity to write a 2-3 page paper (at least 500 words, not counting heading) in which you critically examine your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and actions in relation to the course readings and videos on the issue of gender differences and the expression of feelings. How are boys and girls socialized differently to express their feelings? How much is due to nature versus nurture? Basically, how much does biology or inborn characteristics impact the ability of boys and girls to express feelings, versus how boys and girls are socialized within their agents of socialization (agents of socialization are: family; peers; media; religion; community; work, etc). The video gives a specific view, which you are to discuss in your essay. Do you agree or disagree with what Dr. William Pollack says about the socialization of boys and how to enable them to be more expressive? What is your reaction to the baseball player, Lee Mazzilli’s experience with his children- especially his son? You must be sure to clearly state your position, and what specifically you believe is accurate or inaccurate? Then elaborate in your response. You must represent your position accurately, fairly, and with appropriate completeness. You must critically engage the ideas discussed in this module in a coherent, well structured, thoughtful, and reflective manner. I expect you to use the video as reference in your paper. Your paper needs to include the following three things: 1) Your response to the above questions which should include your beliefs about gender differences and the expression of feelings (be sure to draw on the video as a resource). 2) The experiences you have had that have helped shape your beliefs; and 3) How you believe that your own socialization regarding gender and the expression of feelings have influenced you and/or will continue to influence you in your relationships; your life as a parent (or a potential parent); in your career choice/s; with friends and acquaintances, and any other areas you may wish to explore? Be sure to use the textbook and videos – specifically drawing on the video “The Secret Life of Boys.” This is where the critique will take place. You may use other references as well, but you are not required to. Please use APA format for your paper (times new roman, 12 font, double spaced 1 inch margins). Be sure to save your paper in the proper format and upload it properly. Papers not properly uploaded with result in a zero. No Late Papers. Organization of your essay 1. Write your paper on the topic assigned. 2. Provide a clear thesis sentence(s). What is the purpose of your paper? What do you intend on discussing in your paper? Within the first two paragraphs I should know what your paper is about and what main points you will be discussing. 3. Provide backing and warrant to any claim that you make: do not assume you are right. Backing can be done in a variety of ways. One of the most effective ways is to state your claim, connect it to the video or any resource you are using and cite the reference, provide one or two examples that illustrate your point. 4. You need to have transitions between ideas, and between paragraphs. 5. Avoid rhetorical questions. If you ask a question in your paper you need to answer the question. 6. I encourage you to seek help from the writing center. They will proof read your papers if you ask and provide guidance on structure. ALWAYS use spell and grammar check on the computer. NO text messaging language. 7 Be sure to cite your references 8. You are to use the readings and videos from this class as references. This is not merely an opinion paper- it requires references. 9. Your paper needs to 2-3 pages (at least 500 words- not including heading), double-spaced times new roman, 12 font, 1- inch margins. Good luck and I look forward to reading your papers.

Impact of Gender differences on socialization and expression of feelings
In an attempt to unearth the differences in the expression of thoughts and fee
lings among boys and girls, John Stossel and his team have taken a newer approach in the documentary called “The Secret Life of Boys”. Throughout the 24 min documentary Stossel sets out to challenge Dr. William Pollack’s theory of how real boys interact and express their feelings. According to his explanation, unlike girls boys have been taught not to show their feelings whereas girls have been always encouraged to express feelings. It has been ingrained in the boys that a show of emotion is not healthy. In this paper, my attempt will be to justify the validity of the claims made by both Dr. Pollack and John Stossel and to try and indentify the fundamental differences that lie between the gender bias and the social constructs in our communities that lead to such discrimination in early childhood.
As we progress through the video we see Dr. Pollack claiming that the repression of emotions in the boys stems from early childhood where the lack of encouragement or even urging them not to speak of their emotions has disabled them to express their emotions properly. Often resulting in violent crimes, hatred, anger management issues and vandalism, male inability to process their emotions have led to several crimes in the society. In my opinion, Dr. Pollack’s ideas seem accurate. Infants were not different, yet when they came of age boys and girls tend to...
