Ethical Dilemmas in Global Health Care: Cosmetic Surgery on Children

According to the statistics United States of America had over 36,000 operations regarding
cosmetics on children. Various kind of operation done are rhinoplasty, breast augmentation,
otoplasty, liposuction, tummy tucks, and. Until now there is no law that forbids the use of plastic
on children .According to the moral ethics of surgery a surgery must be performed on adults well
equal to and above 18 years of age.Also according to the ethics of operation if the surgical
treatment isn’t capable of curing the disease then it must not be performed on anyone. There is
no explanation by either of these entities on how we should determine if it is in their medical and
or psychological interest, or how to quantify calculating improving or benefiting the child.
This ethical dilemma can be analyzed by using the 9-step decision-making model.
Step 1: Identifying the problem of the specific person: Surgeries done on children and other
people are on the high right now.
Step 2: One must speak freely about discomfort related to the problem: The values and ethics
are that these children do not have the experience to have the autonomy to make the decision to
have these procedures done. Children do not have enough life experience to have the capacity to
practice the principle of autonomy; therefore, parents are the responsible parties entrusted with
the obligation to protect their children and should not be allowed to request unnecessary
surgeries.
Step 3: Take into consideration factors that relate to the situation and generate alternatives for
resolving the dilemma. There is an increasing attention on what the public believes is beauty and
normalcy due to magazines and extreme makeover shows. Teenagers tend to want an instant fix
to any given problem, especially if the problem is from teasing or bullying due to a large nose,
