Guided critical reading activity – template
The purpose of this template is to help you develop the skills required to critically analyse a journal article. This page contains prompts to assist your note-taking; the next page is a blank template for you to compile your own notes
and should be submitted for assessment. NB To avoid a high Turnitin similarity index, delete this first page prior to submitting your assignment.
    Cite
Skill development: You should be familiar with the citation style guides and able to reference accurately.
Note the FULL bibliographic details of the article and consult the library citation guides to ensure you accurately cite the reading using either APA 7th or Monash Harvard (with page numbers).
    Scope
Skill development: In your own writing, it is important that the aim of what you are writing about is upfront and clear.

Skill in practice: Read only the title, abstract (if there is one), the first three paragraphs and the conclusion (or last paragraph). In 100 words or fewer describe (in your own words) what the article sets out to do. If the purpose of the article is not clear, explain why.
    Argument
Skill development: A skim read of a document in its entirety should quickly reveal what it is about.
Skill in practice: Skim read the whole article including footnotes and references. Does the author have a firm argument or reason why the article was written, or is it difficult to find and/or understand? Why?
    Focus
Skill development: Good writing is usually structured around headings, illustrations and paragraphs and collectively they support the argument and/or discussion
Skill in practice: Re-read the article slowly, word for word, preferably in one sitting. What techniques does the author use to structure the article? Consider how the author has used headings, sub-headings, paragraph breaks, tables and illustrations. (Not all authors will use all of these structural devices.) Are these devices useful or distracting in the article?
    Sources
Skill development: Good writers locate their work in the context of their peers and existing research.
Skill in practice: Does the article refer to other experts in the field? What kind of literature is referenced?
    Conclusion
Skill development: The conclusion should leave you in no doubt about the point of the journal article and why it is relevant and important.
Skill in practice: Does the author reach a conclusion? If so, what is it? Are there any aspects of the article that you feel are unclear or need further elaboration?
    Reflection
Skill development: Think about what you have read and outline the significance of the article.
Skill in practice: How has the article contributed to your understanding of the topic? What have you learnt about the topic...
