Using knowledge from this chapter, explain what happens in the body when it is exposed to different textures. How are we able to recognize a texture without seeing it? Make sure to describe not only the direct effects, but also any peripheral systems that may become activated.

In addition, now consider what happens in the body if you hit your head on a door. Based on the gate control theory of pain, describe how your body would respond.

Your essay must be a minimum length of two double-spaced pages. You are NOT required to include any outside sources. However, if you choose to use any sources, the sources must be referenced using APA formatting; paraphrased and quoted materials must have accompanying citations.

1. Body response to textures
Our hands are very sensitive and respond differently to different textures. The brain will respond to different tex
tures based on the sense of the skin sensor transmission to the somatosensory cortex for the interpretation (Dahiya et.al., 2013). The afferent nerves which runs from the fingertip to the brain stem and reflect the spatial /temporal pattern of nerves based on the type of texture (Johansson & Flanagan, 2009). This phenomenon is known as the isomorphic representation. The Bensmia ha stated that all the neurons in the body are the silk neurons and respond to different textures in different ways and concluded that the texture identification is a complex neural representation (Ryan et.al., 2021). The texture has 20 different dimensions like roughness, spatial scale, coarseness etc. and the neurons will respond based on these dimensions. Some researchers have concluded that the neurons response will be in an idiosyncratic way and there will be differences in the texture response because some neurons will respond to some textures and other neurons will respond to some other textures. Some neurons will also respond to the vibrations created when the skin was rubbed against various fabrics. The researcher Bensmaia has also stated the texture recognition as a vibration associated with the skin deformation patterns that will help in the identification of some rough structures (Ryan et.al.,...
