2. Describe something you do, occasionally or often, that could be seen in American society as deviant (e.g. “out of the norm”).

• This could include many things, such as participation in an activity, wearing of something, using something, eating food in a particularly unusual way, unique gestures, and so on.


• Please don’t describe anything illegal!

3. Now put your deviant behavior into social context.Answer these questions, using course materials for support (show me that you really know what you’re talking about):

• What is it that makes this behavior deviant? (Hint: you’d have to say something about the accepted social norms for this kind of behavior.)


• Have you ever actually been labeled a deviant (or some equivalent term, such as “weirdo”) for this behavior? If so, who labeled you?


• Have you received any negative or positive sanctions for this behavior? Explain.


• Is this behavior a case of primary or secondary deviance? Explain.


• Have you been stigmatized because of this behavior? Explain.

According to Erikson, a behavior is deviant if it does not fit morals, customs, and traditions tied to and originating in religious doctrine.
