Rent and other associated housing costs, such as utilities, are an important part of the estimated costs of attendance at college. A group of researchers at the BYU Off-Campus Housing department want to estimate the mean monthly rent that unmarried BYU students paid during winter 2018. During March 2018, they randomly sampled 314 BYU students and found that on average, students paid $346 for rent with a standard deviation of $86. The plot of the sample data showed no extreme skewness or outliers. Calculate a 96% confidence interval estimate for the mean monthly rent of all unmarried BYU students in winter 2018.

Answer the questions in complete sentences when applicable.

STATE:What is a 96% confidence interval estimate for the mean monthly rent of all unmarried BYU students in winter 2018?

1.PLAN:

  1. State the name of the appropriate estimation procedure. (2 pt)

  2. Describe the parameter of interest in the context of the problem. (2 pt)

.SOLVE:

  1. Name the conditions for the procedure. (2 pts)

  2. Explain how the above conditions are met. (2 pts)

  3. Write down the confidence level and the t* critical value. (2 pts)

  4. Calculate the margin of error for the interval totwo decimal places. Show your work. (2 pts)

  5. Calculate the confidence interval totwo decimal placesand state it ininterval form. (2 pts)

CONCLUDE:

Interpret your confidence interval in context. Do this by including these three parts in your conclusion (3 pts total):

  1. Level of confidence (1 pt)

  2. Parameter of interest in context (1 pt)

  3. The interval estimate (1 pt)

FURTHER ANALYSIS:

  1. How would selecting a 90% level of confidence change the size of the calculated confidence interval? (1 pt) Explain or justify your answer. (1 pt)

  2. At a 95% level of confidence, what sample size would be needed to estimate the parameter of interest to within a margin of error of ± $25? Use σ = $86. (2 pts)

  3. Suppose that a second random sample of unmarried BYU students was conducted during March 2018. Using this data the confidence interval was calculated to be ($340.65, $345.35).Rounded to two decimal places, what is the margin of error for this confidence interval? Show your work. (1 pts)

1.Plan 1
1. Steps involved in the estimation is identifying sample statistics, selecting a confiden
ce level, Finding a margin of error, specifying confidence interval.
2. Parameters of interest in this context is mean and standard deviation.
2. Solve
1.Our sample mean is 346 and standard deviation is 86. Confidence level is 95%. To find critical value we utilize confidence level and sample size. For standard error computation we use standard deviation and sample size. Sample size is 314.
