Use Starry Night Enthusiast™ to observe the changing appearance of the Moon. Click the Favourites tab and select the Moon phases view from the Solar System Moon folder. Then click the Now button in the toolbar. a. What phase is the Moon in? Set the Time Flow Rate to between 1 and 6 hour, depending on your computer’s speed, and Start time flow. b. Describe how the phase of the Moon changes. From which side does the shadow come and how does the Moon’s shape (phase) change? c. Choose Favourites Guides Atlas. Now select the Find tab, type Moon in the edit box and hit Enter. Zoom until the screen is about 1° of the sky. Set the Time Flow Rate to 1 day and, using the single timestep button | look carefully at the features where the shadows first touch the Moon and last leave it. Are the same lunar features always at these locations? They should be if the Moon’s synchronous rotation were the only motion that it had, relative to Earth. If not, explain. (Hint: A Web search on the word “libration” [not libation!] may help.) d. Does the apparent size of the Moon remain constant? If not, explain what this tells us about the shape of the Moon’s orbit around Earth.
