Use Starry Night Enthusiast™ to examine three distant celestial objects. First select FavoritesGuides Atlas from the menu to view the entire sky. Open the Options pane, expand the Deep Space layer and select only the Messier Objects item. Then use the Find pane to locate objects (i), (ii), (iii) listed below. Double click on each in turn, when it appears below the “Search All Databases” box as you type. Use the Zoom buttons in the toolbar to magnify the object. Based on its appearance, state whether it is likely to have a continuum spectrum, an absorption line spectrum, or an emission line spectrum, and explain your reasoning. Bear in mind that because nebulae may contain stars and other objects, they can have more than one type of spectrum. (i) Trifid Nebula, (ii) Ring Nebula, (iii) Lagoon Nebula. Your teacher may assign additional objects for you to find and study.
