Use Starry Night Enthusiast™ to determine which planets, if any, are up at night now. Press Home, select the Find tab, clear any words in the “Search All Databases” box. Turn off the motion and set the time to when you will observe. The planets that will be up this evening will have positive “Alt” values (altitudes, or angles above the horizon) in the list below that box. Double click on any of the planets from Saturn to Mercury that will be up to see its location in the sky. If a planet is visible, arrange to observe it and make an accurate drawing of its position among the background stars. If no planet is visible, you can perform these observations using the Moon. Observe the planet (or Moon) approximately one week later and again make a drawing. Based on its movement among the stars, is the body undergoing prograde or retrograde motion? Explain using the techniques in An Astronomer’s Toolbox 1-1 or more accurate methods suggested by your instructor, determine the angle across the celestial sphere through which the planet has moved in this time.
