Use an experiential tool to facilitate a discussion with clients about diversity in recovery. For example, use hula hoops to represent diversity: different sizes, colors, inner substances (water, no water, things that jingle, etc.), and types (arm hoops, different sized hoops on various body parts). Describe the overall representations of hoops in terms of diversity with clients and then ask them to apply it to their recovery process. Another example is talking about how each person in recovery may be different from others in terms of 'size, color, inner substances, type," but while all hoops have their unique way of being, they are all hoops. This counseling approach can be applied to any experiential form that involves a category that can be separated into different parts (musical instruments, automobile parts, tools, etc.).
