In the article by Edwards (2017), Jo Earl discusses the multitude of reasons for doctors retiring late when compared to their peer group in other professions. She points out that many doctors are not willing to retire at the regular retirement age that is sixty-five and the median age for the retirement of doctors, off late, is around 68-70 years. Earl mentions that many doctors usually reach the heights of their career late when compared to other professions and hence they are not ready to retire early.
Earl mentions other concerns of doctors in retiring such as fear in supporting their lifestyle without a good income, or losing their identity.
