Williams-Sonoma (WSM) was a retail company that sold products for the home. The
company generally uses the two basic channels and
strategy that is retail shop and direct-to-
customer channel through use of internet and e-commerce facility to sell its products. The
company runs approx 522 retail stores in around 42 states of the US. The company achieves its
around 59% sales on retail stores and other approx 41% from direct-to-customer channel. If the
company continuous focus on both channel strategy they will achieve high growth and able to
maintain its position in the market. The company uses the retail channel, direct-to-customer, and
diversification growth strategy that contribute in the success of the company till now and will
also beneficial of the company in future (Carroll & Broadhead, 2001).
In this time, due to the modern era of technology uses of technology in operation and
business is essential aspect of any business. Moreover, through use of technology such as e-
commerce, online services and direct-to-customer faculties WSM’s able to provide the products
of the customers at low cost and at the right time. Due to change of trends of the customers in
recent time, direct-to-customers will help it to generate more sales or revenue in the US market
because in next five years people will prefer to use e-commerce, online services and direct to
home option more in compare to go and purchase product from retail stores (Benedicktus, 2008).
In addition, through retail and direct-to-customer channel it will easily attract the different age
group customers and will be maintained its position in the competitive market. It will help WSM
to face the challenges of the retail industry in the future.
