What are the advantages of a direct democracy as compared to an representative democracy? What are the disadvantages of each type of model of democracy? Which system do you prefer?



2. Describe our system of government's separation of powers and checks and balances. Why did our founding fathers create this kind of system? Give examples of how checks and balances work and what would happen if they did not exist.



3. Compare and contrast the confederal and federal systems of government. Why did the founding fathers first adopt a confederal system after independence? Eight years later, why did they ratify the constitution based upon a federal system? In your discussion, define each system, how it works and what the differences were between them.




4. The state legislatures in Idaho, Florida and Texas allow students to carry concealed weapons on college campuses. What is PGCC’s policy regarding weapons? What are the arguments in favor of and against the use of guns by students, faculty or administrators at Prince George’s Community College? What specific restrictions should be placed on the use of guns while preserving our 2nd
amendment right to bear arms?




5. Compare and contrast the political ideologies of civil rights leaders, Reverend Martin Luther King and Malcolm. How did they differ? How were they similar? Which strategies and tactics were employed? Which were most effective in galvanizing popular support and legislative changes in the treatment of African Americans during the civil rights era? Use examples from the documentary you viewed.



6. Women currently serve in U.S. Armed Forces but technically in non-combat roles. Although there is no draft, if one were to be re-instituted, should women be drafted as well as men? If so, what role should women play in the armed services? Does full equality carry with it certain responsibilities as well as privileges? Discuss the pros and cons of this issue with supporting arguments to bolster BOTH sides.
