Assignment Description

A high-end market research firm has contacted your boss and is trying to sell some business to your organization. Upper management does not want to appear incompetent, so they have asked you to research and explain three major ways multivariate statistics are used in a business.

Small Group Discussion

Research the library, and provide at least 1 example of how a real company has used each of the following multivariate techniques: factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis. Companies that provide statistics software Web sites and market research firm Web sites usually include case studies and customer testimonials.

Read the postings of all group members, and decide as a group which technique is preferred by the group and which example best illustrates the use of this technique.

Use the Small-Group Discussion Board for your comments.

Individual Portion

For the individual portion of this project, on your own, write a summary of 1,500–3,000 words explaining to upper management the chosen multivariate technique, how it is different from the other 2 techniques, how at least 1 other real-life company has used this technique to address a business problem, and how that technique might be used at your own organization.

Scenario

WidgeCorp became the market leader in snack foods after acquiring a rival company, Company W. Their management style and business decision-making differed. Employees at WidgeCorp collected relevant data and through statistical analysis used this information to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations. Company W tended to rely on the experience and judgment of its managers. For the time being, both companies are being managed separately, but within the next twelve months they will merge all management, processes, and accounting. You work for Company W and are a little nervous about this new way of working, but realize that you need to be able to present issues and recommendations with statistical verification to the WidgeCorp executives. You will also introduce and employ statistical analysis to the senior management of Company W's various departments such as Marketing, Sales, and Production. Part of your job will be to educate Company W as well.

Business regularly utilize multivariate methods to break down buyer responses by
gathering the diverse purchaser reactions into important classifications or bunch of data
remembering the goal to decide the significant connections between the responses and the
ite
m or administration being studied.
Multivariate statistics (MS) is applied when there are number of parameters or variables
that impact the outcome. The multivariate analysis identifies how the various factors or
parameters relate to each other and impact the outcome/analysis. The multivariate analysis
itself implies that related equation/s can be complex due to large number of
parameters/factors and number of possible outcomes and their interrelations. For example
shopper reactions can be delegated independent, dependent and related. Independent
reactions are ones where people age or sexual orientation is not influenced by different
factors or conditions. Example of related reaction can be how people’s inclination for a
specified electronic game is distinctively connected/related to his or her age. An
interdependent relation is the one where no single component (or gathering of elements) can
be characterized as autonomous or reliant. People’s inclinations identifying with computers
are multilayered and not effectively connected to isolated variables. The multivariate analysis
breaks down the market study information and identifies the connection/relation between the
different variables or parameters.
This note for the upper management analysis following are the three major techniques of
multivariate analysis:
1. Factor Analysis
2. Multidimensional Scaling
3. Cluster Analysis
MULTIVARIATE TECHNIQUE 3
While all three strategies/analysis are discussed below and can be used in different
scenarios, the focus is on “Factor Analysis”. The comparison between factor analysis and
other two strategies has also been discussed to delineate this technique and bring out its
utility in different circumstances.
Factor Analysis
Factor Analysis is primarily utilized for information diminishes and synopsis.
Marketing department utilizes it where there are large numbers of elements or factors which
are related and these elements are required to be diminished to a more reasonable or sensible
level. Connection between sets of a few interconnected factors is analyzed. Besides each
component grasps an identified measure of the aggregate change in the watched /observed
factors and the variables are recurrently recorded relying upon the array (Mulaik, 2009). The
factor analysis always uses error terms in their equations to account for unobserved or latent
variables that may impact the variations but have not been identified or observed.
Example (Factor Analysis)
Two examples have been drawn
A. The first example has been drawn from a Jute Manufacturing Company
The following variables were identified to work on and analyze their impact
1. Raw Material : The size of raw material packet and its movement
2. Working Environment : qualitative factor as regards satisfaction level
3. Machine Maintenance : Machine breakdowns and work stoppages
4. Employees Motivation : The unsatisfied employees can exit organization while satisfied
ones can work creatively
5. Facility Layout Design: To maximize effectiveness
MULTIVARIATE TECHNIQUE 4
6. Material Handling
7. Planning & Scheduling
8. Safety Mangement
9. Research & Development
10. Production management : Five M’s
Linguistic Value was assigned e.g. very good can be assigned value of 10 or 5 while very
poor can be assigned value of 0
The outcome was by way of planning the production system
B. The second example of factor analysis case was acquired from Economics and
Business Journal which was composed by Sloka et al. There was a review led from June to
December 2013 of the businesses in Kurzeme area of Latvia. (Sloka, Kantane, Buligina, G
Tora, & R Busevica, 2015)
Each extensive and medium size organization of...
