Unit 12 Final Project Instructions The final project of this class is for you to deliver a presentation on the earth system components and their interactions for a place of your choice. The place could be as small as a town like the town you live in, or as large as a state/province/small country. It could be a place that you have never visited, too. With this project, you will need to conduct research, collect data, and analyze the processes that shape the environment of your place of choice. Your presentation will need to include the following aspects: --Its location (provide the spatial context in terms of the state/country/continent, as well as latitudinal range and hemisphere) --Climate (seasonal patterns, seasonal patterns explained with earth-sun geometry, climate type, temperature and precipitation patterns and controlling factors such as latitude, location on the continent, and global air circulation patterns; a climograph is preferable.) --Landscape (refer to location relative to plate boundaries, explain landscape features related to plate tectonics, weathering and mass wasting, as well as the various landform processes we discussed) --Natural disaster and natural resources (explain why such natural disaster tends to be found here) --Biomes, specifically, the vegetation type and the reason why such vegetation is developed here --What are the human impacts that have changed the original/natural environment? Specific requirements: --You are expected to use concepts and terminology we introduced in class. You are expected to collect data from internet resources and create a climograph to discuss the climate characteristics. If available, collect data on temperature related to urban heat islands, on hydrographs related to watershed properties and flooding, on soil types and biodiversity to put together a complete picture of the place’s earth system. --Focus on the “how”s and not the facts. For example, how does temperature regime affects precipitation pattern and thus affect the availability of water resources or the erosion of soil? How is climate affecting the vegetation type? And/or how are these components of the physical environment affecting and being affected by humans. With this assignment, you will choose your group members, form a team of 2-4 people, choose a specific place, plan on the data to be collected, and develop a proposal of the project that outlines your location, identifies your team members and the tasks each is responsible for.
