Understanding style means looking at multiple examples to see what they have in common. If you look atexamples representing one artistic style (such as the ones fromthe essay on Impressionism from the Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History), you should be able to generate a list of common subject matter, visual features, and techniques that typify the style.
Step 1:Pickonestyle of artwork from this list:

- Minimalism
Step 2:Describe the major characteristics of this style. Do not use quoted material, try to write a simple description of the style in your own words.
Step 3:Find an example of the style you choose from the book. Include the title of the artwork, artist, and page number.
Step 4:Identify the topthreevisual elements at work. (the most dominant). Choose from this list:
- Line
- Space
- Mass (mostly used in sculpture)
- Light
- Color
- Shape
- Texture
