Industry Structure Drives Competition and Profitability, Not Whether an Industry is Emerging or Mature, High Tech or Low Tech, Regulated or Unregulated
The structure of any industry has been driving the competition of the industry with another industry in the global market. Competition is not dependent on the maturity of the company. Existing companies have advantages of entry barriers rather than new entrants. In this case, the company operates on the Supply-side economies of scale. Here the organisation produces more units in larger volumes and the company expands lower costs per unit of production. The Demand-side benefits of scale are also known as a network effect in the business economy. The value of the company's products or services is increased with the number of buyers of its products or services. As stated by Porter, strong financial support is required to develop a business or production purposes in the market. Existing organisations prefer to invest a huge amount of financial resources for maintaining the level of competition with new entrants in the market. The financial support is required for fixed facilities, build inventories, customer credits and fund for start-up losses. Securing the distribution channels for selling products or providing services is a big challenge for new entrants. Sometimes, there is a barrier to reach the distribution channels, thus new entrants create bypass distribution channels for creating higher competition level.
