TOPICS AND PRESENTATIONS:
Absolutely no late topics accepted. You must be in class on the day of presentations to turn yours in for credit. The purpose for this exercise is that everyone benefit from each other’s work. If you are not here you do not contribute or benefit so, no credit.
You will write three summaries on current biological topics taken from journal articles. You must present your summary to the class on the day indicated in the class schedule.
You may use popular journals for sources or
reputable
web pages. Each topic is worth
30
points for
90
possible total points.
Web sites that are news oriented will not be accepted, such as MSNBC. You must use a full spread article, not a news brief or summary page!
Suggested Sources
:
Science News, Scientific American, Bioscience, Audubon, Time, Life, Reader’s Digest, National Geographic and News Week.
Do not submit newspaper articles.
CRITERIA FOR THE REPORT
Write your summary in three sections:
1.
Source:
You must always give credit where credit is due. Properly cite your source using the following format:
Author, title of article,
name of journal (always in italics),
date, page numbers
Example: Nickens, T. Edward. “Insect Opera”
Audubon,
May-June 2000. Pp. 25-30
2.
Summary:
In your own words, summarize the article. This should be one full page, type written double spaced and include the highlights of what you read. Do not copy any sentences from the article. If you must “quote” then do it properly.
3.
Personal Reaction:
a. I want to know what you think of the article. Explain how it
relates to what we cover in this class.
- Tell me what you think. Why you chose this article, do you think it’s a fair representation of the issue? How might it relate to you or your experiences?
The article you review must be no more than one year old unless approved by the instructor. The article is full spread, at least

pages written text (that is, without the pictures). You may NOT use a short news brief or web site.
You have to have your article approved by the instructor.
GATEWAY CRITERIA: You will not receive credit unless the following criteria are met
- You attend the Topics Presentations session.
- The summary must be type written, double spaced and a reasonable size font (11 or 12 pt.).
- A proper citation for the article must be included.
- The article must be from a recent source, no more than one year old.
A copy of the article must be included with the summary.
The Scoring Criteria sheet must be attached
as the cover page, with your name on it.
