Sample Review/Annotation Essay Focus: The imperative need for humans to have access to natural environments in urban settings. Nature is critical to human development and increased experiences in nature provide various benefits critical to our physical and mental health. Furthermore, city planners and developers need to be aware of equity issues that already exist where certain populations do not have access to nature in urban settings, which could cause serious damage to their quality of life. Review: In this article, researchers explain a study they conducted in California where participants were sent for an hour-long walk in an urban setting. One group walked in a urban area, down busy streets, with very little access to natural landscape. The other group walked through a park, which had an abundance of natural landscapes. Before and after their walks, both groups were given tests to assess their overall feelings/emotion (affect) as well as their thinking (cognition). The group who walked in nature demonstrated clear gains in affect. In other words, they had more positive feelings and emotions after their walk than the group who walked through the urban setting. Furthermore, they also demonstrated some gains in cognition, while the urban group did not. Overall, this study shows the important benefits to physically accessing nature. One hour walk in nature significantly improved the overall well-being of the people who had access to it. While the authors admit that their small study is just a start to the amount of research that needs to be done on this topic, they are hopeful that more research will continue in order to better understand the link between nature and human health. This study was really thorough, and the only thing that stood out to me that may be worth noting (as far as compromised evidence is concerned), was something the author's themselves pointed out--the majority of the participants were young and able-bodied. I'm curious if these findings would change if participants with different age, ability, and other categories were observed. I may investigate similar studies that target historically-marginalized groups in order to discuss equity. Nevertheless, in my paper, I will use this source to discuss the influences nature has on mental health, specifically, as a way to help people avoid depression. The findings on a decrease in anxiety and rumination presented in this article will be important evidence for my discussion in that area.
