Media Ownership and Advertising
Introduction
Media industry in Australia is highly diverse spanned across various kinds of traditional and digital formats, catering predominantly to English-speaking population of the country. Media reporting formats include radio, television, internet, and IPTV displayed across local, regional, state and federal level, reporting on several issues, policy, and culture. Australia’s population is provided with several kinds of television networks, thereby focuses an
d encouraged diversity in Australian broadcasting services. An act named Broadcasting Services Act 1992 is the main regulatory framework that sets out the limit and control over commercial TV, radio and newspapers. Any media player is not allowed to own, control and regulate radio, TV and print media operations. The media laws and ownership landscape in Australia is gradually is gradually being updated, modified and revised by new set rules and choices allowing media players to configure themselves the way they are operating and conducting their business operations.
In this pace, media ownership in Australia, with respect to some recent controversies that involved Fox News, BBC and CNN is discussed upon. The merger of Fairfax media and Nine Entertainment and its implications on media companies, journalists and media landscape in context to Australia is also discussed upon.
Media ownership in Australia
Media ownership in Australia is understood in three mechanism-government, commercial and community.
i) Government media organisations are owned and regulated by federal government, two government media organisations in Australia are Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and Special Broadcasting Corporation (SBS) (Lamb, 2020). Broadcasting Services Act 1992 specifies and defines responsibilities of ABC and SBS in terms of maintaining high level independence and integrity, prohibiting ABC from broadcasting advertisements ensuring that it maintains independence and integrity of commercial interests. The fact that ABC and SBS are protected by legislation doesn’t necessarily imply that government owes complete control and power over its content and editorial policy. ABC operates through 48 local radio stations, along with nationwide broadcasters like Radio National and Triple J (Lamb, 2020).
ii) Australian Community and Media Authority, in light of importance of mass media, allocated television and radio frequencies authority to community broadcasters. Community media organisation is supported and funded by the government, Channel 31 is a community television station that broadcast content and programs in several cities like Brisbane, Perth and Sydney (Lamb, 2020).
iii) Commercial: This form of media ownership takes into account privately owned media companies established for making profits through advertising content and program sales. Some common commercial media owners are The Murdochs, Kerry Strokes, The Gordons, James Packer, and many more (Lamb, 2020).
The operation and functioning of all media forms and organisations is clearly outlined in the Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act of 1983, it has clearly specified the fact that broadcasting service should be of ‘high standard’ in Australia that contribute a sense of information, entertainment and reflecting cultural diversity of the Australian community (Lamb, 2020). The media programs should be of an ‘educational nature’, transmitting material about Australian affairs and allow citizens to obtain and access information regarding different artistic and imaginary aspects of Australia (Scott, 2018).
Media ownership is said to be of high importance in Australia’s media industry on account of several reasons. Accessing diversity of views and opinions is the major reason aimed at allowing media firms and organisations to embrace diversity of news for making informed and right decisions. Media needs to be diverse and objective in its approach for making the right decision; a healthy media democracy can be established through smooth functioning and control of media ownership in the country (Scott, 2018). In democratic societies, like Australia, media ownership strives to make citizens responsible and aware for making informed choices, rather than acting out of ignorance and misinformation. Secondly, it also serves a strong ‘checking function’ ensuring that elected representatives uphold their oaths of carrying and executing defined duties (Media Ownership Regulation in Australia, 2020).
Implications of merger of Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Company
