NURBN2021 Assessment Instructions 2021 Assessment Task 2: Academic Critical Review Essay Due: Monday 19th April @ 11:59pm. Word Count: 1500 words (+/- 10%) Weight: 40% Research and Writing time: approx. 12-20 hours Number of References: 10 minimum, APA 7th style ONLY Purpose: This essay is designed to develop a capacity to identify, research and critically analyse the key concepts within health promotion and health education as it relates to the role of the professional nurse. This task is intended to encourage students to practise writing and presenting researched material in a logical, concise manner that is academically rigorous, including correct referencing, spelling and grammar. Topic: As we have seen in previous studies, vulnerable populations are influenced by various determinants of health. Vulnerability can be diverse and is something every nurse should try to minimise. Discuss how and why your population is vulnerable, and what determinants of health contribute to this. Your writing should include discussion of the nurse’s role with regards to health education, empowerment and health literacy, and how these factors may influence care for this group of people. You should also mention the connection to health promotion, community health and primary health care. Instructions: For this essay, you are to focus on the target group you have chosen for your final presentation program. You should first explain who your chosen group are and why they are vulnerable, describing (and supporting with evidence) the determinants of health that are contributing to their vulnerable state. In the following paragraphs, explain the nurse’s role in relation to each key concept in the topic: health education, empowerment and health literacy- specifically for this group. In these paragraphs, you might make a small mention of how practice might be different for other populations? Or how these concepts might influence nursing practice or health outcomes for your target group? Where appropriate, also include how the nurse’s role and the vulnerable population, relate to the bigger picture- health promotion, community health or primary health care. Remember the purpose of this task is to demonstrate your understanding of key concepts in the topic. Do you understand how the nurse’s role and practice is influenced by the people they care for? Can you explain how the nurse’s practice might drive change for the individual and/or the whole community? Make sure you demonstrate good understanding of each concept, the nurse’s role, and make connections to how they may influence positive or negative health outcomes. TIP: The first step to ANY assessment task is to read through the topic and underline ALL key concepts. Then you ensure each one is clearly discussed or addressed within your task to demonstrate your understanding. The key to good academic writing is to clearly articulate the connections between the concepts and how they relate to each other and the evidence required to support your arguments. Good luck. Introduction
The
use of substances and alcohol is significantly perceived as injurious to health. There are statutory warnings over the alcohol products indicating towards the harms that individuals may receive over the course of time, if they continue using alcohol on moderate or on excessive level. At the same time, it should also be noted here that the consumption of alcohol, if it becomes addiction, specifies a particular age group as vulnerable to various unwanted diseases in life (Tran et al., 2020).
The following is the analysis of the males aging from 50 to 59 and living in Casey. They have been identified upon the grounds of their vulnerability to various health issues due to the consistent use of alcohol. Their vulnerability, as per the observation of the social determinants of health along with customary trends in Australian societies, is kept on sensitive level.
A Brief Overview
At first, it is significant to note here that alcohol addiction is not habitual trend, which emerges suddenly in the target population; it is the continuous process of accepting the intake of alcohol as a part of the social customs in Australia. Consumption of alcohol in all Australian societies is a permissible act and, therefore; preventive measures against it are not severe. In other words, when it comes to examine the social determinants of health, Australian conventions allow alcohol as a part of their societies and it lets people consume it for a durable timeframe in life (Mollayeva et al., 2018).
Usually, the statutory warnings apply to the teens and children in families, as they are not permitted to intake alcohol, which is quite a common trend. However, once they attain maturity and become independent in life, there are no such restrictions on social grounds as to how to determine their alcohol intakes. The above observation, on social grounds, makes one standpoint clear and that is the targeted population, which is the males aging from 50 to 59 in Casey have a long history of accepting intake of alcohol on social grounds.
It is a part of their traditional approach, which formulates the society of Casey as liberal. A consistent intake of alcohol from early adulthood to this phase of life constitutes healthcare concerns, which need formal addressing. The biological evolution of the human body weakens the immune system and intake of alcohol works as the catalyst to speed up this process. In other words, if some male has begun taking alcohol in life at the age of 20, he will definitely be vulnerable to several diseases when he turns 50 in life (Homel & Warren, 2019).
It is because there is a 30 years of long history of taking alcohol on routine bases. As per the observation of statistics, over the past few years, the males living in Casey having age range of 50 years to 59 years have also shown significant rise in the quitting procedure of alcohol. There are more than 6% of males in this category, who have left alcohol consumption forever either through personal efforts or through support programs (Kraus et al., 2020).
