Tony |
Tony Soprano is responsible for a variety of investments and on-going projects that generate large cash flows. |
Mr Soprano must constantly make difficult decisions regarding long-term strategy, marketing tactics, organizational |
goals, and human resources management. Employees, sub-contractors, competitors, and seemingly innocent bystanders |
must occasionally be offered a 'severance package' when they have outlived their usefulness to the organization. |
Tony and his associates generally refer to this style of human resource management as "Whacking". The data set |
details the wieght of individuals who recently 'got whacked'. Assume that these persons are a random sample of all |
persons who have been or will someday be 'whacked'. Further assume that the weights listed include all body parts |
and fluids. Estimate the mean weight of the population of whackees with 99% confidence. |
See the answer sheet for each part of this problem. |
Carmela |
Carmela Soprano is Tony's wife and the mother of their two children. She works hard to remain blissfully unaware of |
the details surrounding her husband's business dealings. Mrs. Soprano has a shoe obsession. She is constantly buying |
shoes that are, "Just too perfect to pass up." Entire rooms and rented storage units are filled with Carmela's shoe |
collection. Recognizing that she might have a serious problem, Mrs. Soprano decides to estimate the average cost |
for her shoes. Luckily, she has very meticulously taped the sales slip to each shoe box. She selects a random sample |
of shoe prices as the basis of her estimate. See the answer sheet for each part of this problem. |
Dr. Melfi |
Jennifer Melfi is a psychiatrist who is also Tony's shrink. Having a charismatic and sometimes violent sociopath for a |
patient has been very difficult for Dr. Melfi, but she has also gained some new professional insights through her |
experience in treating Mr. Soprano. One benefit of the experience is that Dr. Melfi has created a new scheme |
for classifying people according to their 'Need for Dominance' and their 'Amount of Inner Anger'. As part of her initial |
research into this theory, Dr. Melfi has administered a brief questionaire to a large random sample of volunteers. The data |
details the breakdown of how each questionnaire respondent was classified according to Dr. Melfi's Dominance/Anger |
theory. Use this contingency table to make the estimates of proportion as specified on the answer sheet. Assume |
that her questionnaire respondents are a random sample of adult American males. |
Christopher |
Christopher Soprano is Tony's trusted nephew. Tony delegates a wide variety of sensative tasks to Christopher. Christopher |
is also a heroin addict. Due to his position and affluence, he is able to buy heroin in bulk quantities directly from |
established suppliers. Lately, Christopher is concerned that his regular supplier is providing heroin of sub-standard purity. |
The data set details the purity of random samples of heroin from his latest bulk purchase. Absolutely pure |
heroin would have a purity value of 1.00. Lower values indicate lower purity. The supplier claims that the merchandise |
is of the highest quality (.90 purity). Compare Christopher's sample mean to the .90 benchmark. You will tolerate |
up to a .05 probability of a Type I error. Is the sample mean significantly less than the null value? |
"Junior" |
Corrado "Junior" Soprano has been the focus of repeated racketeering, fraud and tax evasion investigations by the FBI |
and other law enforcement organizations. Junior is Tony's uncle (the brother of Tony's mother) and his health is |
failing due to old age. Although Junior thinks he is still the boss, Tony is truly the individual who wields the greatest |
authority in the family. Junior is examining income from various family operations to guage whether the mean cash flow |
is increasing or decreasing. He suspects the the mean monthly take is different from the historical average. Junior |
will base his conclusion on a large random sampling of separate income sources. The data set details the size, mean, |
and standard deviation of Corrado's sample. The historical monthly average is also listed. Is the monthly cash "take" |
significantly different than the historical mean? Use an alpha of .01. Also, find and interpret the observed significance |
(p-value) of the test. |
Pauli |
Paulie Walnuts is a "heavy". He ensures that Tony's management directives are carried out and also enforces the |
family's strict code of professional ethics. Mr. Walnuts displays a unique sense of personal style in his grooming |
and choice of wardrobe. Recently, Paulie has been wrestling with the idea of maybe getting a total makeover to |
update his image and make himself more attractive to "classy broads". To help himself make the this decision he takes |
a random sample of opinion from adult females. The data set details the responses he received to the question, "Hey |
lady, you think I need a new haircut and suits, or should I just forget about it?" If the data indicates significantly |
more than half the women said "Yes", Pauli will get the total makeover. Use an alpha of .10 and see if the proportion |
of females who think he should change his style is significanlty greater than .50. |
Anthony, Jr. |
Anthony Soprano, Jr. is Tony's rebellious adolescent son. He thinks all his dad's organized crime stuff is boring and |
stupid. Since he wants to have an exciting and glamorous career, Anthony Jr. wants to be a statistician. Based on the |
information given, help Anthony Jr. find the appropriate critical values, p-values, and test outcomes. |
