STU Number:

Word Count:
Part 1:
1. a) Numerator represents the upper part of a fraction.
b) Denomi
nator represents the lower part of a fraction.
For example, the fraction 5/9 has 5 as its numerator and 9 as its denominator.
2.
Simplest form of 24/40
=6/10
=3/5
Simplest form of 18/42
=3/7
3. a)
2/3=(2*4)/(3*4)=8/12
3/4=(3*3)/(4*3)=9/12
5/6=(5*2)/(6*2)=10/12
b)
14000+22000+12000=48000
Remaining books=60000-48000=12000
Computing books=2/3 of remaining books
= (2*12000)/3 = 8,000 computing books
4.
Three notes of 50= 50*3= £150
Liz got back £10.50
Therefore, Liz spent 150-10.50= £139.50
Each pair shall cost 139.50/2= £69.75
5.
a) 240.50*19.54=43,781.324
Rounding off the number to 2 significant digits.
Third digit is 7 that is more than 5. So the second digit is rounded off to the next =44,000.000
b) 52100= 521 * 102
6.
a) Each person paid £210/3= £70
30% of total amount was saved. So 70% of total =£70
Hence total = 70*100/70=£100
30% of 100 =£30 saved by each of the siblings
Total savings=30*3=£90
b) Average savings per person=Total savings/3
=90/3
=£30
7.
a) 3/4 -7/9+2/3
Least Common Multiple of 4,9,3=36
3/4=27/36
7/9=28/36
2/3=24/36
3/4 -7/9+2/3
=(27+28-24)/36
=31/36
b) 0.1 is the largest among the given numbers.
8.
People who said yes=3/5 of (90+60) =90
Women who said yes=3/10 of 60 = 18
There are 18 women among 90 people who said yes.
Men who said yes=90-18=72
Percentage of men saying yes = (72/90) *100 = 80%
9.
If Annabelle reaches Birmingham at 10:30 am.
She reaches Birmingham station 5 minutes earlier=10:30 am -5minutes=10:25am
She started from Euston 1hr 10 min earlier=10:25 am-1 hr 10 min= 9:15am
But the train would leave Euston at 9:05am or 9:25am. If Annabelle leaves at 9:25am, she will be late for the conference. So she should leave Euston at 9:05am so that she reaches Birmingham before the...
