Today's PCs have many different connections. In order to input information and have corresponding information outputted by the computer, all of the devices need to be connected to the correct ports.
For example, a standard serial port is often blue or black with nine pins (one row of five and a row below with four). That particular port is known as a DB-9 port (or DE-9) port and transmits at five volts.
